Government pushes for Panchayat-led management of rural water supply systems

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, announced on 22 October 2026 that it held a virtual conference to align Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 with 16th Finance Commission grants. The initiative aims to shift focus from building new infrastructure to maintaining existing systems through Gram Panchayat-led planning and sustainable financing.

India targets 105.56 GW pumped storage capacity by 2035-36

The Press Information Bureau announced on 19 October 2026 that India is scaling up Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs), which act as "water batteries" to store renewable energy. The Central Electricity Authority has mapped a pathway to commission 100.81 GW of new projects by 2035-36, bringing total capacity to 105.56 GW.
