New soybean varieties show potential to double average Indian yields

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare announced on 13 October 2026 that the ICAR–National Soybean Research Institute, Indore, held a Soybean Harvest Day on 9 October 2026. Preliminary data from the event shows that improved soybean varieties NRC 268 and NRC 270 yielded approximately 20 quintals per hectare, even during adverse weather. This is significantly higher than the current Indian average of approximately 10–11 quintals per hectare. The initiative aims to provide a scientific basis for increasing national productivity through better varieties and production technologies.

  • New varieties NRC 268 and NRC 270 yielded approx. 20 quintals per hectare.
  • Current average soybean productivity in India is approx. 10–11 quintals per hectare.
  • Potential yields can reach 22–25 quintals per hectare under favourable conditions.
  • Improved varieties and technologies can achieve 15–20 quintals per hectare.
