Government partners with National Law Universities to reduce court case backlogs

The Ministry of Law and Justice announced on 14 October 2026 a research-based mission to address case pendency in 100 judicial districts identified as hotspots. These 100 districts account for over half of all district-court pendency, contributing to a national total of over 5.8 crore pending cases. Nineteen National Law Universities (NLUs) from sixteen states have been requested to use their students and researchers to analyze the causes of delay and suggest strategies to reduce the backlog. The release does not say when this initiative takes effect.

  • Over 5.8 crore cases are currently pending across courts in India
  • 19 National Law Universities from 16 states are involved in the mission
  • NLUs will use pro bono clubs, researchers, and students for ground-level analysis
