The Ministry of Defence announced on 24 October 2026 the start of the 'Setting to Work Phase (STW)-2' for an indigenously developed Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system Energy Module. This system, developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (DRDO), is designed to increase the underwater endurance of diesel-electric submarines by reducing their need for atmospheric oxygen. Following rigorous testing for power production, the module will be handed over to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited for integration into Kalvari-class submarines in early 2027.
